Europe Day, reinvented
General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) of the Council of the European Union
May 2021
Question
How do you mark Europe Day when you cannot open your doors to the public?
Answer
By bringing Europe to homes across the EU.
Europe Day, 9 May, is synonymous with Open Day at the EU institutions. The pandemic prompted the Council of the European Union to try out a completely new approach to marking the anniversary.
Tipik was selected as the Council’s partner to create a memorable online experience around the 2021 edition of Europe Day. Together, we developed a set of digital tools effectively bringing Europe Day to Europeans, rather than the other way around.
IngenEUs game
How well do you know EU inventions? You can still play the game of EU inventions we developed as part of the online Europe Day celebrations to find out! The quiz for all ages challenges users to test their knowledge of European inventions from all 27 EU countries.
The game is available from the Council’s Europe Day online hub, together with other innovative features such as a 360° virtual tour.
Getting the word out
To create momentum around the EU’s big moment, Tipik also developed a social media campaign to promote these interactive tools. It covered a strategy for Facebook and Instagram as well as paid promotion on both platforms.
The highly successful campaign drove massive interest for the EU’s first digital anniversary. It may well have paved the way for a new approach to Europe Day – turning it into a celebration spanning the physical and virtual realm, and truly reaching out to all Europeans.
